Sadly tragic events such as this is becoming all too common and could possibly have been avoided if Carbon Monoxide (CO)alarm manufacturers provided unambiguous instructions regarding test and maintenance instructions. CO alarm manufactuers state in their literature that units should be tested on a regular basis. Unfortunately, very few tell their customers that the only way to test the sensor is to use a calibrated CO test gas. Presseing the 'Test Button' only tests the battery and does nothing to verify the functionality of the alarm's sensor. Since the 1990's over 80 million CO detectors have been installed in the US. The maximum life of a CO detector on average is five years. It is estimated that 40 million alarms in the market no long function and can't be relied upon. Factory Mutual plan that a functional test for carbon monoxide alarms shall be performed by spraying a calibrated CO test gas into the alarm's sensing chamber. This will inform the user if the alarm works.
