NASA Unsure About Shuttle

A former NASA engineer is blasting the department, saying minor fixes won’t change the fact that the current space shuttle design wastes money, resources, and lives.

Rick Jurmain of Eau Claire says the most recent shuttle delay is another example of the need for a new design. Jurmain worked in mission control for 13 missions, including Ulysses and Galileo, and left three weeks before the Challenger blew up in 1986. In that time, there have been few changes to a shuttle design that he believes is faulty.

"For 20 years, we've known that shuttles blow up and that fixing the little bits and pieces around the edges isn't going to help that it's the wrong design," says Rick Jurmain.

Jurmain says strong political motivation needs to be the driving force behind changing to a new design.
