WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities say a frantic 911 call to the Marathon County Sheriff's Department from the home of an 11-year-old Weston girl who died from untreated diabetes was made by friends of the girl's parents.

Captain Scott Sleeter of the Everest Metro Police Department says Randall and Althea Wormgoor each spoke to a dispatcher Sunday as chaos and cries could be heard in the background at the Dale and Leilani Neumann home in rural Weston.

Madeline Neumann died that day from an undiagnosed and treatable form of diabetes. Her parents prayed for her to get better. Her mother, Leilani Neumann, says she never expected her daughter to die.

Mrs. Neumann says the family believes in the Bible, and it says healing comes from God.

Original story:

Police say an 11-year-old Weston girl died from not being treated for her diabetes and investigators say her parents decided not to seek medical attention but, instead, prayed over her.

Madeline Neumann died Sunday. Police say an autopsy determined the girl died from a diabetic ailment that left too little insulin in her body. She had probably been ill for about 30 days.

Investigators say the girl's parents attributed the death to the fact they apparently didn't have enough faith.

i have had diabetes for 15 years and im now 21 i am so angry because i have been in DKA myself and i know how it feels and it is not right for a parent that is responsible for a child to not give them medical care god gave us knowledge so that a doctor can help us if you cant undestand that u need help....

I am a mother of a girl who has diabetes since she was 6 and is now 24. What happens to people who do not care for their elderly parents correctly, they are taken to court and charges are brought against them. I hope this act does not go unpunished. Others can use the same EXCUSE that they neglect their children's illness due to religious beliefs. These people should be ashamed and punished for their actions.

When I first heard of this news today, I immediately was sick and angry. I am a parent of a juvenile diabetic child, and also a christian that believes in the power of prayer. However, I also believe that God gave us the resources to use, and gives doctors the knowledge to help with these types of situations. We must use these resources! Our child recently suffered from DKA, and seeing her in the hospital as sick as she was for only a few DAYS was hard enough for me to watch. I can not imagine how these parents could sit there and watch this child suffer for so long! They need to be punished. I am happy to hear that their other children were removed from the home. It breaks my heart that a child so young had to suffer and leave this earth in such a way that could have been prevented. Diabetes is a serious matter!

DKA is just a horrible way to die, so painful, like a slow torture, how could anybody do that to their child.

There should be criminal charges against the parents in this case.

This is ABSOLUTELY terrible, more should be done to help children in this situation. If this was an animal situation, the owners would be jailed with neglect. This is absolutely HORRIBLE!!!

Ignorance is no excuse. Google her symptoms and dozens of links to diabetes websites will pop-up telling them the need for medical attention.

What in the world were they thinking? They had enough faith in the medical system AND God to take her for her shots when she was little, but when she's sick and then DYING they don't.

This is such a sad story. The parents should have seeked medical attention and continued to pray. I don't think that it is right for everyone to trash the parents though. I was good friends with their kids and they are very wonderful people. I know for a fact that the other children are not in any danger from their parents. They are very good people, and they would not intentionally endanger any of their children.

I KNOW THIS FAMILY!! THIS LIL GIRL WAS A GREAT GIRL SHE WAS A LIL SIS TO ME I WAS IN FOSTER AND LIVED WITH THEM. SHE HAD HER FULL LIFE AHEAD OF HER! THE MOM IS AND WAS ALWAYS LIKE THIS! BUT I DONT KNOW HOW SHE COULD LET KARA DIE!

I read that the girl was homeschooled which is why no school officials would have known about it. As a 36 year old with type 1 diabetes I am horrified by this. I feel the parents should be punished. I had read online that the child was diagnosed at age 3. I wonder how she could have survived this long without treatment or if treatment only recently stopped. I have even had the thought that perhaps they didn't want to bother with all the needs of a diabetic child.

When will these people catch on to the fact that God answers prayers THROUGH medical help?????????????

Wow this story makes me sick. What kind of people do not seek medical attention for there child and just let her die. I am so tired of religious people thinking that faith and prayer will cure anything. What horrible people!!

I can't believe this! I'm so shocked I don't even know what to think. I am a mother of a beautiful boy and even when he gets a high grade temp. we're calling the doctor. But also as I think of this I wonder, wasn't she in school? And why didn't her peers or teachers know something was wrong?

Posted by: Emily Location: Eau Claire on Mar 26, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Are you KIDDING me?!? C'mon people, I also believe in the power of prayer, but you don't sit by and ignore the medical advancements and treatments that are available! Even God himself has GIVEN us the brains and materials to discover treatments and medicines.

As a parent of a diabetic child for 12 years - this is horrible!! These parents should be punished!! You can live a full life with diabetes. WOW - horrible!!
