Red Cross Workers Help in Katrina Recovery

Three people from the Eau Claire area Red Cross are already heading south to help hurricane ravaged victims in the Gulf Coast.

Local Red Cross workers say when a disaster this large hits its common for people nationwide to respond.

The Chippewa Valley volunteers are staying in Montgomery, Alabama until it's safe to go closer to the storm's center.

Once there, volunteers will address both immediate and long-term needs.

"They can do some counseling for people in addition to making sure they have food and a place to move into," says Chippewa Valley Chapter Red Cross worker John Lee, "They can't live in a shelter forever so we can help them find resources to move into a new place."
