Sergeant Jeff Soppeland, who's been with the department 20 years, says he was fired yesterday for breaking a department policy that prohibits deputies from criticizing superiors.

He says he and a few co-workers were talking for two hours about the sheriff's handling of a fellow deputy Jason Zunker's funeral service, among other things. Zunker was hit and killed while directing traffic on Highway 53 in January.

Soppeland admits to breaking the policy but says his termination is shocking.

He says the firing now goes to arbitration, which could take six to eight months.

Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says because it is a personnel matter, he has no comment until the open records become available.

Those of us knowing the Sgt. find this appaling. A great and honorable deputy, a respectable and honorable teacher and leader, and a respectful person overall. Sounds like there are personal issues involved, which are sad. This man has done fine service and something such as this is pathetic. Bad political strategy, and a fine man is being hurt in the process.

The truth must be pretty hurting to the sheriff. Hard to believe that someone with no heart over the death of his own officer would care about this. Paranoid? There usually is a reason for this retaliatory behavior....something to hide?

I would think the sheriff has more fish to fry than this- he should start with his own plate. Seems to be a self-serving sheriff. Makes my stomach go into knots. Don't worry sherrif- just deserts is on your way.

Do not believe that someone should get fired for speaking the truth in what a persons personal feelings are about any matter. Nowdays the "the truth" is what most respectable employers want to hear.

Getting fired over a conversation or an opinion after 20 years of service sounds ridiculous. If there is not more to it than what the article reads,DROP IT!There has to be bigger issues in the sheriff's dept than this.Let officer Zunker rest in peace.
