Wisconsin Local Governments Must Sell Land To Utilities

Local governments will have to sell public land to utilities for high-voltage power lines under a bill Governor Jim Doyle signed into law Thursday.

The Republican-authored bill comes after the Douglas County Board refused to negotiate with American Transmission Company over public land for the company's planned power line from the Duluth, Minnesota, area to Wausau. Conservationists oppose the line, though the county has since agreed to negotiate with the company.
