Push To Protect Prairie Chickens In Wisconsin

A conservation group is trying to protect thousands of acres of grassland in central Wisconsin that's home to a threatened bird.

Wisconsin has one of the few remaining populations of prairie chicken among Great Lakes states.

The Central Wisconsin Grassland Conservation Area Partnership has a goal of protecting 15,000 acres of habitat over the next ten years.

Clark, Portage and Wood counties have the largest concentration of prairie chickens. The group has also included Adams, Marathon and Taylor counties in its goals.

The birds are brown, black and white. The males have long feathers at the top of their heads.
