Springtime brings thousands of Sandhill Cranes to the Midwest, as they make their annual migration from down south.

It also has volunteers trying to catch a glimpse of the feathered creatures.

Crane Counters gather together in different spots each year across the Midwest to try to count the birds.

They say that's because Sandhill Cranes start arriving on wetlands to start establishing breeding territories.

A Beaver Creek Naturalist says the cranes help gauge how well the environment is doing.

Jim Schwiebert says, "Cranes are just really an excellent indicator of the health of wetlands. So having a lot of cranes in Wisconsin just speaks very highly of the quality of wetlands we have here."

If you'd like to participate in the annual Crane Count on April 19th, you can visit the International Crane Foundation website to look up your county leader.
