Energy Saving Tips

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that Americans spend more than $160 billion each year to heat, cool, and light our homes.

With department officials estimating that number to be even higher this year, they've kicked off a nation-wide campaign this month on ways to conserve energy and save money on energy bills.

"We're projecting higher than normal winter heating prices this year," says Under Secretary David Garman. "We're trying to get the word out to consumers that there are things they should be doing right now to get ready for winter, get their homes ready for winter."

Garman suggests making sure your home is properly insulated, sealing air leaks by windows, and consider using a programmable thermostat. Those practices will prove cost effective even if prices level off.

"Saving energy and using energy more efficiently is something that we need to do all the time, even while new energy sources are coming online," says Garman.
