"Conscience Claus" Vetoed By Governor

Governor Doyle vetoed a bill Friday that would have allowed health care workers to opt out of more than a half-dozen procedures on religious or moral grounds without fear of reprisal.

The Republican-authored measure also would have protected medical workers from punishment if they refused to refer patients elsewhere.

The Democratic governor says the bill is "a disservice to patients and to our health care system."

Wisconsin Right to Life lobbied for the bill, which was opposed by the Wisconsin Medical Society, among other groups.
