UW-Stout hosted the supermileage challenge Friday and Saturday at the Stout Technology Park.

Event coordinator Ben Hahn says the students designed cars they thought could save on fuel.

The gas in each vehicle is weighed at the beginning and end of each lap. Each car travels five laps around the course.

Hahn says the three laps that used the least gas are averaged out to determine the winner.

He says the event helps shape high school students for the future.

"One of the big problems now is fuel efficiency and gas mileage. And in a way, it's just kind of introducing them to the problem and maybe some day they'll solve it,” said Hahn.

Hahn says more than 20 high schools rolled through the course.

He says this year is the sixteenth year stout has hosted the event.
