The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

How can they only give him 30 days in jail, 10 yrs probation and 80 hrs community service. He had alcohol and marijuana in his system. A 9 yr old is dead because of this man and that is all they gave him. This upsets me more than you could ever know. I want to know who I can actually talk to about this decision to be changed.

I haven't hunted for several years, but I still remember the 3 main rules of gun safety: 1. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. 2. Treat every gun as if it were loaded. 3. Be SURE of your target AND BEYOND. Following that last rule would've saved the boy's life. A little boy has a very difficult time imitating a turkey convincingly... I firmly believe in the 2nd Amendment and each individual's right to bear arms (bear, that means wield and display), but with that right comes a heavy responsibility, as with any freedom. Treat your rights with proper respect, or they WILL be taken away... Pax et Amor

I agree with Jim. While it is a tragedy that this happened, the father obviously wasn't hunting responsibly. My father is a hunter safety instructor and I was taught the ethics and safety of hunting from little on.

IF THE FATHER WAS HUNTING WITH HIS 9 YEAR OLD SON, WHY WASN'T HE NEXT TO HIS SON? IF I WERE HUNTING WITH MY BOYS THEY WOULD BE NEXT TO ME, SO I COULD TEACH THEM THE ETHICS OF HUNTING AND BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT THEY MAY HAVE. I BELEIVE AT 9 YEARS OLD, KIDS DO NOT HAVE THE JUDGEMENT IT TAKES TO BE ALONE IN THE WOODS WITH A LOADED GUN. IF THE SON WASN'T IN THE WOODS WITH A GUN, THEN HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WITH IN REACH OF HIS FATHER AND THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.

To Tim: I'd like to know who took away your sense of humanity. Your opinions are so disheartening and uncalled for. While this family mourns, you should put yourself in their shoes.

Wow-I can't believe people are so cold! I'm sure the father feels guilty enough already! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Compassion in these cases do not change anything. Just like memorials for mass shootings around the country. They don't change anything either. How about a little legal action? Whe someone is reckless with a gun and causes a death, even to a family member, we are supposed to feel sorry for them?

What a tragedy. The man shot and killed his son; have a little compassion.

It is hard to believe that these events are called accidents when it is truly negligence. You never pull the trigger on a gun unless you are 100% sure of what you are shooting at. I am sure it is tragic for all involved but really why do these things keep happening? It obviously does not require common sense to own a gun in this country.
