Verbal threats and gunshots have greeted surveyors in Marathon County preparing for construction of a high-voltage power line across northwestern Wisconsin.
Sheriff's reports say a man on an all-terrain vehicle approached the workers on Marathon County Highway P just before 4:00pm Tuesday and fired four shots in the air. The incident remains under investeigation.
Sheriff's Lieutenant Dale Wisnewski says authorities also received reports of power line opponents verbally threatening crews surveying land for the project.
Wisconsin Public Service is the project's main contractor and has hired a private security company to have guards accompany crews building the line from Rothschild to Duluth, Minnesota.
Plans call for the crews in Marathon County soon to begin clearing trees and brush and digging holes for the poles for the line.
