No Hurricane Evacuees For Now To Wisconsin

The transfer of hurricane refugees to Wisconsin is now on hold.

The Wisconsin Emergency Management agency says Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told governors of the decision during a conference call Wednesday.

It says Chertoff stated plans to ship masses of refugees now in Texas to most other states is being postponed in favor of movement to nearby states in the Gulf region.

The division says Wisconsin was asked to remain on standby after Governor Doyle said the state could accept more than eleven-hundred evacuees.

Wisconsin Emergency Management says Federal Emergency Management Agency officials found many storm victims prefer to remain in the gulf region as they resolve issues concerning the status of property, employment and the safety of loved ones.

Thirty storm refugees are now living at a youth center at Wisconsin's State Fair Park, while the American Red Cross is helping more than 100 others who have come to the state to stay with friends or relatives
