The state Division of Motor Vehicles' legislative liaison says Wisconsin specialty license plates benefiting endangered resources and the Green Bay Packers are the only two considered successful.

Carson Frazier says many groups think that they're going to get a large contribution and that is a good way to do it.

But he says they really need to think really carefully about what their market would be.

The Department of Transportation says more than 18,260 vehicles have the endangered resources plate, which brought in nearly $466,000 during 2007, and about 17,130 drive with the Packers plate, which garnered about $436,100 for Lambeau Field restoration.

Frazier says about 50,000 of the state's 5.3 million registered vehicles sport fund-raising plates.

The DMV says Wisconsin has about 75 different specialty license plates in all.

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators says that's low compared with other states, with Maryland boasting more than 600 and South Carolina 208.

Drivers pay $15 for specialty plates the first time they're issued, then an annual donation of $20 to $25 in addition to the standard registration fee, which is $75 for cars.
