48th Wisconsin Solider Killed In Iraq From Western Wisconsin

Family members are mourning the death of a Wisconsin soldier in Iraq.

The Pentagon says Specialist Benjamin Smith of Hudson was killed along with one soldier from Missouri and another from Colorado when a bomb exploded near their Humvee near Baghdad Wednesday.

All were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Relatives say the 21-year-old Smith had e-mailed his older brother Tuesday to reassure the family he was O-K after news of earlier deaths in his unit.

A day later, he was killed by the roadside bomb. Smith was a 2002 graduate of Hudson High School.

Smith had served a previous tour in Iraq, and his unit was redeployed there five weeks ago.

Army officials say memorial services for the soldiers will be held in Iraq
