A proposal to require a minimum 25-year sentence for serious child sex offenders has won state Assembly approval. Despite an estimate that it would add at least $165 million dollars a year to state prison costs over the next 25 years.
The state corrections department says it would add 9000 prisoners by the year 2030, requiring construction of additional prison space or housing inmates in other states.
The vote sends the bill to the Senate. It would also need the Governor's approval to become law.
