Wisconsin Sex Offender Prison Bill Move To Governor

A proposal to require minimum 25-year sentences for serious child sex offenders easily passed in the state Assembly ... even though it's estimated that it would add at least 165 million dollars a year to state prison costs by the year 2030.

The state Corrections Department says the bill would add 9,000 prisoners in 25 years, requiring construction of additional prison space or housing inmates in other states.

Despite the pricetag, the Assembly voted 82-to-13 last evening to approve the bill.

The vote sends the bill to the Senate. It would also need Governor Jim Doyle's approval to become law.
