Longtime Marshfield Area Lawmaker Passes Away
A former state legislator known as a longtime advocate of education causes in Wisconsin has died at the age of 87.
Ray Heinzen represented the Marshfield area for four terms in the state Assembly in the 1960s and then served a term in the state Senate as well.
Heinzen, a moderate Republican, was the prime author of legislation sought by Democratic Governor Patrick Lucey that merged the University of Wisconsin and ten former state colleges under one administration with one board of regents.
He also served for seven years on the state board of vocational and adult education.
After losing a Senate election in 1972 to William Bablitch, he was a legislative liaison for the state Department of public Instruction until he retired in 1983.
His funeral is Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Marshfield.
