Eau Claire State Senator Tries Again For Concealed Weapons Law

Concealed carry supporters will make another try at passing state legislation.

Republican Senator Dave Zien says a new version of a concealed carry bill requires the state Department of Justice to handle background checks and issue most gun permits.

The previous version had sheriff's departments issuing permits.

Zien says the bill won't be formally introduced for a couple weeks until co-sponsors sign on. Assembly Republicans fell one vote shy of overriding Governor Doyle's veto of the bill in 2003.

Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort director Jerry Bonavia says the changes in the legislation won't matter. She says the bottom line is that it puts more hidden, loaded guns on the street
