"Shelter From the Storm"

A Madison-based group has made two trips to areas damaged by recent hurricanes to rescue pets left behind, and now are looking for temporary and permanent homes for the animals in Wisconsin.

"Shelter from the Storm" is seeking homes for more than 100 displaced animals and the application can be done online. The Web site is http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/WI209.html

The group is also seeking donations of food, animal care products, and funding to help treat the animals, who suffer from problems like parasites and heartworm after exposure to the conditions.

"We have a lot of veterinarians that do the veterinary part of it without charging us, but the medical supplies and antibiotics, the treatment for heartworm is very expensive," says Angie Schmick, a veterinary technician and volunteer for "Shelter from the Storm.”

Donations are being accepted at the Buffalo Valley Veterinary Clinic, 1004 East Main Street in Mondovi. Anyone with questions can contact Schmick at (715) 926-3826.

Donations can also be made in Eau Claire at the Eau Claire County Humane Association or Pet Foods Plus, 3460 Mall Dr.
