We now know the name of one of the two people killed Monday in a plane crash at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport.
Therese McGinn says her husband Dean McGinn was the pilot. She says he had been on vacation and flew to Stevens Point for no particular reason.
McGinn's son says there were problems after Dean took off from the airport. He says the plane was circling to land again when it crashed at about 5 p.m.
The other victim hasn't been identified.
Federal investigators are at the airport Tuesday (today).
Monday's story:
Monday night's plane crash happened at the end of the Stevens Point Municipal Airport Runway.
The FAA says two people on board the single-engine Piper were killed. It happened shortly after five Monday evening in the city well field. The airport manager told us the plane was taking off, but crashed into the woods. Police say an eye witness saw the plane drop down steeply after taking off, then saw a rising cloud of smoke. The FAA and NTSB will investigate on scene Tuesday morning. FAA records show the plane is registered to a man from Green Bay.
Stevens Point police say at least one of the victims was a man, possibly the owner, but their names have not been released. Their bodies will be taken to Madison for autopsies.
