More than 60 dogs have been removed from a Pleasant Prairie home after police officers responding to a neighbor's concerns found unsanitary conditions.
Police Chief Brian Wagner says an animal control officer removed the dogs from the residence Monday and took them to the Safe Harbor Humane Society. Most were Italian greyhounds, a small dog that sometimes weighs less than 10 pounds. They're being farmed out to other rescue and humane groups.
Meanwhile, more than 50 tickets had been issued to homeowner Gary Smith for having unlicensed dogs, unvaccinated dogs and more than four adult dogs in a residence, and for housing them in unsanitary conditions.
Wagner says most of the dogs were in good health, but the home was declared unfit for living by the Kenosha County Health Department because of the animal waste and other problems.
The chief expects more tickets to be issued. He says Smith and his wife apparently have raised dogs for sale for many years
