Hudson Funeral Home Murders: Bishop Apologizes

A Roman Catholic bishop apologized Friday for failing to find out more about a priest found to have likely killed two people to cover up his sexual misconduct before committing suicide.

Superior Bishop Raphael Fliss defended his decision to allow Father Ryan Erickson to become a priest five years ago.

The decision came after police began investigating allegations of Erickson's sexual misconduct in 1994. Erickson was never charged for those allegations.

Fliss says a psychological evaluation conducted after the police probe but before Erickson was ordained showed he was fit be become a priest.

Fliss says he is truly sorry for not doing more to find out what really happened.

On Monday, a judge ruled that Erickson almost certainly shot to death two funeral home workers in 2002.

Prosecutors said one of the workers had learned that Erickson was sexually abusing someone, providing alcohol to minors or both. Erickson committed suicide in December after police questioned him for a second time in the slayings.
