16-year-old Kelsey Schmitz from Bruce died Tuesday several hours after rolling her truck on the way to school.
We talked to Kelsey's high school principal about the student he describes as unique, intelligent and very talented.
It was another student who told Bruce Principal Larry Villiard about the crash. He says he immediately went to the scene on Highway 40, near Bruce.
The State Patrol says Kelsey lost control of her truck, rolled it several times and was thrown from it. Investigators say she wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Kelsey was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Villiard drove her parents.
“They own a huge dairy farm just a mile from town. (Kelsey) had just dropped her mom off at the barn and then she usually stops and picks up a friend. She never made it here," Villiard says.
Tuesday afternoon, Villiard got a call from Kelsey's dad, then called her classmates to the gym.
"I told them I didn't have good news and informed them that Kelsey had passed away,” he says holding back tears. “I just told them I was sorry and said it was a tough day for our school and that we've lost a great student and you've lost a great friend."
Villiard says Kelsey had a lot of friends. He says she left many of them in tears.
"She was just a beautiful young lady and very talented,” he says. “This is a huge loss.”
Villiard says the last couple days have been very hard for students. He says counselors have been available at the school.
