Many cities and towns are holding ceremonies today, honoring the sacrifices of the men and women who died fighting for our country's freedom.
Organizers say about a thousand people showed up in Chetek to show their support of our nation's troops and veterans.
A couple we talked with today say they're proud that Chetek is such a patriotic community.
The sounds of four military planes filled the air as people in Chetek paid tribute to the men and women who died fighting for our country.
And, as the Chetek High School band played songs of America, thousands of on-lookers paid tribute to our troops and veterans who fight for our freedom.
Paula Knutson of New Auburn lost her daughter, Second Lieutenant Tracy Alger, when a roadside bomb killed her last November.
Today, a plaque to honor Tracey was given to her family.
Pauline Knutson says, "It is very much an honor in her memory."
Knutson says today's ceremony paid great tribute to all fallen soldiers.
And says it's still hard with Tracey's death only six months ago.
Pauline Knutson says, "It's still kind of hard because everything is still the first with all holidays. It's just a tough thing."
Still, Knutson says she's proud she could be a part of today's ceremonies.
Pauline Knutson says, "I was very honored everyone pulled together to put on a memorial like this. It's a great honor."
Organizer Ed Nayes says, "We must remember our heroes that fought in the battlefields to preserve what we have and that is our liberty, our justice, and freedom for all."
Organizers say many different groups help out and make the Memorial Day celebration possible.
They say it's an event that's been around since World War II and seems to keep growing.
