Police Use Pepper Spray to Clear Halloween Bash Crowd

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz speculated that perhaps the annual Halloween Party along State Street ought not to be held in the future.

Madison police used repeated bursts of pepper spray early today to break up crowds of Halloween revelers. But authorities said there were no reports of serious injuries or property damage

There were 269 arrests Saturday night and early Sunday after 178 Friday night and early Saturday.

The mayor says some people come every year, bent on starting trouble. He says the only way to end it is to order State Street shut down, every business, for a couple of nights. But he says he doesn't know if the community is ready to take such a step.
