Your cell phone bill will be going up, perhaps as soon as December.
Wisconsin Public Service Commission spokeswoman Amanda Riddell says the commissioner will add a 75 to 85 cent surcharge on every cell phone, pager and other wireless device bill to subsidize the upgrade of the state's 911 system.
The upgrade would bring the state into compliance with a federal order to give local 911 call centers the ability to locate cell phone callers.
The surcharge will only apply for three years.
State Representative Phil Montgomery authored the bill. He says about 70% of calls to Wisconsin 911centers come from cell phones, a number that's expected to rise as cell phones become even more common.
