2 killed in head-on crash in Vernon County

STODDARD, Wis. (AP) -- Two people have died in a head-on collision in Vernon County.

Sheriff John Spears says the crash happened on Highway 35 near Stoddard Tuesday afternoon. He says a driver, 70-year-old Robert Williams, of Stoddard, pulled out to pass a vehicle and collided with an oncoming vehicle. Williams died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, 55-year-old Margaret Springborn, of rural DeSoto, was taken to Gundersen Health System where she later died.

Both victims were wearing seat belts.
VIROQUA, Wis. (VERNON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE) -- Sheriff John B. Spears reports a two vehicle accident occurring on April 29th 2014 at approximately 03:20p.m. resulting in two fatalities. The accident occurred on State Highway 35 approximately one mile south of Stoddard in the Town of Bergen.

The northbound vehicle operated by Robert M. Williams, age 70, of Stoddard went to pass the vehicle in front of him and struck the southbound vehicle head-on operated by Margaret L. Springborn, age 55, of rural DeSoto. Robert was pronounced dead on scene by the Vernon County Coroner’s Office. Margaret was transported to Gundersen Health Systems in Lacrosse and later pronounced dead as a result of her injuries by her Doctor.

Both parties were wearing their seatbelt.

Assisting the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office was the Wisconsin State Patrol, Stoddard-Bergen Fire Department, Genoa-Harmony Fire Department, Stoddard EMS, Genoa EMS, and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office.

The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
