Construction workers are scrambling to build an emergency crossover on flood-threatened Interstate 94 to spare commuters a 113 mile detour.
The flooded Rock and Crawfish Rivers have forced state transportation officials to reroute traffic from Milwaukee to Madison through Beloit.
Frank Busalacchi is the Secretary of the State Transportation Department. He says his agency has signed an $896,000 emergency contract with Hoffman Construction Company out of Black River Falls to build a crossover between I-94's closed westbound lanes and open eastbound lanes.
The goal is to create a five mile stretch of two-lane interstate between Johnson Creek and Lake Mills.
Busalacchi says the crossover could be ready by the end of the week.
