Proposed Wisconsin Concealed Weapons Law Is Changed

Republicans have modified a bill that would let Wisconsin residents carry hidden weapons, by adding a provision that would let police check whether owners of cars they stop are carrying concealed weapons.

A second provision would prohibit officers from drawing their own guns on motorists simply because the motorists have a concealed carry permit.

The amendments were added to satisfy the major hang-ups that police lobbying organizations had with the bill.

Supporters of the measure say people should be allowed to shoot criminals who attack them. Opponents argue that the bill will only encourage gun violence and will leave people unsure of whether others around them are carrying hidden weapons.

Governor Doyle vetoed a similar measure in 2003
