Wisconsin Department of Justice officials have joined the Clark County Sheriff's Department in investigating the events surrounding the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man by deputies Tuesday afternoon ten miles southwest of Neillsville.
Clark County dispatch received a call from a motorist around two o'clock that afternoon, who had seen the suspect standing in the middle of a road near Lake Arbutus.
When deputies arrived, the suspect went into the woods and authorities say he fired multiple shots in their direction and then tried unsuccessfully to break into a home on Pine Place. By then, additional Clark county and Jackson county authorities were on the scene.
"At this point after all the attempts to verbally stop the actions of this white male suspect," says Sheriff Louis Rosandich. "Unfortunately deadly force was used."
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Rosandich says the identity of the 36-year-old, who had a cabin in the area, will be released pending notification of family.
