The hail measured five inches in diameter.

And it was the third-largest hailstone in state history that fell in Waukesha County on June 7th.

The National Weather Service says the weather system that day was very active, with a number of thunderstorms throughout southern Wisconsin.

The weather service says the hailstone fell about two miles east-northeast of Delafield about 4:35 p.m. It landed just west of Pewaukee Lake.

It wasn't much smaller than the state's largest recorded hailstone.

That hailstone -- which measured 5.7 inches in diameter -- fell May 22, 1921, on the north side of Wausau in Marathon County.

The second largest on record was 5.5 inches in diameter. It fell exactly one year before the one in Waukesha -- on June 7, 2007 in Port Edwards in Wood County.
