Barron Embezzlement
The Barron County register of Deeds and a secretary in the same office have both been charged with felony theft for embezzling money from the register of Deeds Office, officials say they were not working together.
Officials say Shawn Hanson the register of deeds for Barron County and a secretary in her office Lisa Dennis were taking money for a period of at least a year and half.
According to criminal complaints Hanson admitted to taking around seven thousand dollars.
Dennis says she took about four thousand.
Officials believe the incidents happened between the early part of 2003 to June of 2004.
Hanson and Dennis have since resigned.
Officials say they have are now implementing new transaction procedures.
The suspects face up to six years in prison and ten thousand dollars in fines
