Ridership began increasing back in June when gas prices soared. Gas prices have started to go down, but former commuters are still using the transit system.
"Our new passengers stayed with us and we're just seeing tremendous growth in ridership. And in fact, we're seeing the highest ridership figures that we've seen in 22 years," said Gwen Van Den Heuvel, Eau Claire Transit manager.
From January through November, Eau Claire Transit gave about 912,000 rides, which is the highest 11-month total since 1983.
Van Den Heuvel expects the system to reach the one-million-rides mark by the end of this yea or by the end of January.
