An independent pathologist will review the death of a La Crosse man with terminal cancer who died 26 days after he was savagely beaten.

Three men are charged with breaking into Ron Muenchen's home on the city's northside in October, 2004 and punching and kicking the man before taking his morphine medicine.

Muenchen suffered a lacerated liver, broken ribs and head injuries.

Attorneys for two of the men accused of beating Muenchen asked for the independent review of medical records to determine whether the beating or cancer caused his death.

An autopsy by the Minnesota Regional Coroners Office concluded Muenchen died of blunt force trauma.
