Concealed Weapons Proposal Clears Wisconsin Assembly

The state Assembly early Wednesday morning passed a bill that would let Wisconsin residents pack concealed weapons.

The Assembly passed the measure 64-32 after an all-night session. The Senate passed the bill last week.

But Republicans who control the chamber changed the language to add tighter restrictions on carrying while drinking and carrying in school zones as well as set up refresher training for gun permit-holders. That means the bill has to go back to the Senate. Both houses have to pass identical versions before it can go to Governor Doyle.

The Democratic governor has vowed to veto the bill. He says it won't do anything to keep people safe.

The bill's Republican authors think they can muster enough votes to override Doyle's veto.
