Governor Jim Doyle says he'll sign legislation to end Wisconsin's automatic increase in the gas tax, but the state might have to raise vehicle registration fees to compensate for the drop in revenue.
Doyle says vehicle registration fees are much lower in Wisconsin than they are in other states. He says each time the state transportation budget comes up for renewal, the Legislature will have to look at an appropriate mix between raising gas taxes and registration fees.
The Legislature approved a bill this month to end the gas tax, which automatically increases every year to keep pace with inflation.
Doyle says he'll sign the bill because gas prices have already taken a toll on Wisconsin families.
