Snowmobiles may soon have to slow down after dark.
A bipartisan bill to have a statewide speed limit on snowmobiles has passed the Assembly and is expected to make it through the Senate next month.
State Representative Dean Kaufert is a snowmobiler himself and sponsor of the speed limit legislation.
The Neenah Republican says last winter's 37 snowmobile fatalities -- the second highest in state history -- was too much. So he's proposing a 55 mile an hour speed limit that would apply only at night.
Of the 37 fatalities last winter, 28 people were killed in crashes after dark.
Kaufert says 90% of those involved speed and alcohol.
He says the bill has bipartisan support, so he thinks it could go in effect later this winter.
