The mother of the La Crosse child who died in a fire this weekend is remembering her little boy.
Brenda Mitchell lost her son, 6-year-old Angelo Poppe, after a fire at her home on Huber Court in La Crosse. Firefighters say he died from smoke inhalation.
"He was always caring and loving and supportive to everybody,” she remembered. "When other kids were happy. He was happy. He was just so kind, so kind. So lovable. Just a wonderful kid."
Brenda says she’ll remember so many things about her son, like the way he loved his bike and sports.
"He loved every kind of ball you could think of. Basketball, football, golf ball, baseball, even those little balls that they put in the play places."
She says she’ll even remember the little things that most parents might rather live without.
"Him getting on my nerves,” Brenda said “Getting into trouble. Telling me, I'd tell him to go clean his room and he'd say ‘no, you do it’ with a little attitude."
But most of all, she says she’ll forever cherish that tiny smile and his giant heart.
"I'm gonna' miss most of all, him saying I love you mommy."
Brenda says Angelo’s family is mentally, emotionally and physically drained from dealing with his death. She says she just can’t forget the way he looked when he was in the hospital.
Investigators say a child experimenting with a lighter started the fire, but they aren’t saying which child it was.
