La Crosse Voters Face U.S. Troop Withdrawl Referendum

The ballot referendum question will have no bearing on outcome.

But, the La Crosse City Council decided to ask it anyway.

On a vote of ten-six Thursday night the council decided to put an Iraq troop withdrawl question on the spring ballot.

Council president Joe Ledvina says they usually don't deal with state or federal issues, but because the group "Bring Them Home Now" collected enough petition signatures, they'll go ahead with a referendum.

If the council had voted against the referendum, City Attorney Pat Houlihan says the petitioners could have then gotten a court order to have their question put on the ballot.
