A campaign from a statewide dental group says heart health can be affected by poor dental health. /The Wisconsin Dental Association is airing commercials targetting people who are at risk for heart disease.
Recent studies show a link between periodontal disease, or gum disease with increased plaque build-up in vessels around the heart.
"Anytime you have a chronic infection in your body, bacteria hide and grow," says Dr. Kent Vandehaar of Chippewa Falls Denta. "Those bacteria can be released into the bloodstream and travel to any organ in your body including your heart and cause some problems."
The association suggests brushing and flossing regularly and as well as keeping with regular dental check-ups.
