Average Speeds are Down on State Highways

It appears that people are easing off the gas pedal around the state.
The average speed on 55 mph and 65 mph highways both dropped slightly for the first time in recent memory.
That's according to a preliminary review of traffic data recorders scattered across the state.
A representative from the Department of Transportation Data Unit says the decrease is because of more enforcement, and because higher gas prices make it more economical to drive at a slower speed.
But, he says there are still plenty of people with lead feet. Average speeds remain above posted limits.
The average speed on 55 mph highways was 58.1 mph last year versus 58.5 mph in 2004. On 65 mph highways, it was 68.6 mph last year and 69.5 mph in 2004.
