A man will go to prison for three years for his 12th drunken driving offense.
Chippewa County Circuit Judge Thomas Sazama sentenced Wesley Rogers of Luck to the prison time, plus three years of extended supervision that can put him back in prison if he doesn't stay sober.
Authorities say the 49-year-old Rogers was found staggering outside an SUV on the shoulder of Highway 53 in the town of Tilden last New Year's Eve. A state trooper says Rogers told him he had stopped to relieve himself but locked himself out of the vehicle.
Defense lawyer Eva Ritter agreed that Rogers' drunken driving record was extreme, but she noted that his most recent offenses were in the state of New York seven years ago. She says Rogers has worked hard to avoid drinking and driving.
She asked for 18 months in prison, but the judge sided with the prosecutor in ordering the longer term. The judge also imposed a fine of just over $1,200 and a 36-month revocation of his driver's license.
