A snowmobiler had to be pulled out of Lake Chetek last night.
It happened three miles north of Chetek in Barron County, near the Highway "M" bridge.
Witnesses tell us they were watching two friends snowmobile across the lake, skipping open water, when one of the men went in. The owner of a resort across from the spot the rider went in tried to help.
"I could see the snowmobile go down, and I could hear him screaming for help,” said Gary Root. “By the time we could get to him, 30 or 40 seconds later, he was down and we didn't see him again until 7:44. He was in the water for about an hour and 40 minutes."
Root says his wife called 911, and a bar patron who was pulling up to the resort also tried to save the young man.
"I ran up to find something to throw to him, but he was already under the water," said Jeff LeCleir
Witnesses say dozens of rescue workers tried to get the man out of the water. His condition is unknown and the Barron County Sheriff's Department is not releasing any information until later today.
