The Department of Natural Resources and legislative leaders say they're close to a compromise on regulating piers in Wisconsin waters.
Representative Scott Gunderson is predicting they'll reach a deal within the next couple weeks. Gunderson is chairman of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee.
The fight over regulating docks has been going on for nearly two years. A key stumbling point is the DNR's desire to crack down on large piers. The DNR says most dock owners won't be affected by the rules. But, opponents say more lake property owners will be affected than the DNR has indicated.
Gunderson and Senator Neal Kedzie say the compromise in the works would grandfather more piers than the DNR's current proposal.
The state has some 187,000 piers.
