Former U.S. Senator William Proxmire is being remembered today at the State Capitol in Madison.
His memorial service is open to the public and starts at noon.
Governor Jim Doyle is one of the many officials and friends of Proxmire who will speak at the service.
Proxmire was a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate for more than 30 years. He won a special election in 1957 and held the post until he did not seek re-election in 1988.
He was known for spending almost every weekend back in Wisconsin and shaking hands with hundreds of voters at any big event.
He died in December after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 90.
The service will be shown on Wisconsin Public television tonight at 8:30.
