UW Madison Campus Paper Prints Controversial Danish Editorial Cartoon

The UW Madison chancellor is defending the campus newspaper and its decision to reprint the cartoon that has ignited violence in the Muslim world.

Chancellor John Wiley says the Badger Herald has a right to publish the cartoon that depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist.

The university newspaper reprinted the cartoon Monday, saying the reaction to it has made it newsworthy. An editorial said the reprint was not intended to offend Muslims.

Some Muslim students don't see it that way. The Muslim Student Association president Mir Babar Basir says the decision to run the cartoon is "pure racism."

The association has taken its complaint to the dean of students, who passed them along to Wiley.
