A 62-year-old man suffered cuts and burns after a firecracker discharged prematurely in his face in Marathon County.

County Sheriff's Lt. Dale Wisnewski says Larry Hollatz, of Mosinee, attempted to launch the firecracker from a tube at about 10 p.m. Friday when it struck him a home in the Town of Green Valley.

Medical crews took him to a Marshfield hospital to treat his injuries.

Wisnewski says the extent of the injuries was not known but the victim had to speak with a plastic surgeon about repairing the damage.

The department did not file any charges for possessing illegal fireworks because deputies could not find them at the scene.

That is true, but then permits should actually be given out. Our family has attempted to "do things the right way" and get a permit for the last two years in Rusk county, but without success. They simply said, "no!" That is only going to encourage people to take the fireworks elsewhere. They will be lit, one way or another! So stop punishing those that are trying to abide by the law. Ironic that we have to put up such a battle to celebrate our independance!!!!!!

Just because you can buy them doesn't mean they aren't illegal. There are many things like that. Most people know that you need a permit to light anything that explodes, moves, or leaves the ground.

Permits are required for fireworks that leave the ground and permits need to be bought through the city not the retailer. So no, he did not have every right to have those fireworks.
