The tilt-o-whirl is ready to spin at the Northern Wisconsin State Fair, but will it be safe going at full-tilt?
Manager of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair Pinky Lee says yes it will.
“Basically our rides here have all been inspected in Wisconsin prior to being here,” says Lee. “They'll in turn be inspected today and tomorrow and possibly Wednesday or Thursday morning, depending how fast they move."
A fatal accident that took the life of a young girl last year in Oshkosh has the rides crew thinking safety. They say their company, North American Midway Entertainment, has a clean record.
"Just stubbed toes and fingers, but fortunately we haven't had any incidents,” says manager Greg Stliowski.
The rides are all set up and the safety checks are being performed, but there's more than just safety on the minds of fair management."
"Everything that we have transportation wise for getting from point a to point b runs on diesel. So that cost is going up then during operation hours all our generators run on diesel."))
The cost of running generators alone takes up 10 to 15 percent of the fair's sales. Lee says they’ve decided not to pass the cost on to the customer.
"We're maintaining our prices at about last year's. We're trying our darndest to absorb these diesel prices to a degree, the best we can, and so is the carnival,” Lee describes.
Overall, they say safety remains the main priority.
.
“Just behave yourself and act like you're supposed to and just enjoy the rides, and you won't be harming something else either,” Lee advises.
Playing it safe, and keeping fairgoers from paying the ultimate cost.
Managers say one way to keep safe on rides is to avoid wearing baggy clothing that could get caught.
The fair opens Wednesday, with the carnival starting at noon.
